About the role

Knox City Council is seeking a Risk & Insurance Specialist to join our dynamic Governance and Risk team.

As the Risk & Insurance Specialist, you will contribute directly to the Council’s vision of fostering a safe and thriving community. You will play a pivotal role in strengthening Council’s risk culture by providing practical advice across all areas of Council to help identify, assess and manage strategic and operational risks; contribute to supporting business continuity planning; and support the Audit and Risk Committee.   You’ll also oversee insurance renewals and manage liability claims in collaboration with Council’s insurers and contracted claims manager.

Your critical eye and initiative will streamline existing processes, drive improvement opportunities, and elevate Council’s risk management service for internal and external customers.

Reporting to the Head of Risk & Assurance this role is a permanent position based at the Civic Centre, Wantirna South. We support flexible working arrangements while ensuring operational needs of the role are met.

This is a Band 7 classified role. Remuneration will be $107,507.54 - $120,572.47 (depending on experience) plus superannuation in accordance with the Superannuation Guarantee.

  • Experience in risk management, insurance, internal audit and business continuity
  • Substantial understanding of local government, public sector or large operational organisation and the context in which they operate
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in managing complex workloads
  • Demonstrated astuteness in understanding sensitive or critical nature correspondence
  • Initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, discretion and a strong work ethic is vital

Responsibilities

  • Risk Management Framework: Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive risk management framework to address strategic, operational, and legislative compliance across Council
  • Positive Risk Culture: Promote a proactive risk culture by championing awareness, delivering training, and embedding risk management practices across all levels of Council
  • Risk Management System: Oversee the implementation and management of an enterprise risk system to centralise and streamline risk recording and monitoring
  • Risk Advice: Provide expert, strategic, and operational risk management advice, including assessments, controls, and reporting to support organisational growth and safety
  • Insurance: Lead Council’s insurance renewal processes, manage claims, and ensure appropriate coverage and compliance
  • Internal Audi: Assist with the development and coordination of a risk-based internal audit program with a operational focus to ensure compliance, enhance accountability, and monitor the implementation of corrective actions across Council
  • Business Continuity Plans: Develop, review, and implement business continuity and crisis management plans to ensure preparedness and resilience in crisis scenarios

Skills Required

  • Qualifications: Relevant tertiary qualifications in Risk Management, Business Management, or a related discipline
  • Experience: Experience in risk management, insurance, audit, business continuity with proven expertise in AS/NZS ISO 31000 Risk Management standards
  • Interpersonal Skills: Highly developed written and verbal communication
  • Requirements: Right to work in Australia, Working with Children Check, Police check
