About the role 

We are seeking an experienced Senior Financial Accountant to play a key role in delivering high-quality financial accounting and statutory reporting services and supporting strong financial decision-making across the organisation.

Working within a collaborative finance team, you will contribute to Council’s financial reporting and statutory reporting processes, while also supporting the development of financial capability across the business. The role provides expert advice and insights to senior stakeholders and contributes to the continuous improvement of financial systems, reporting and processes.

Leading a small team, you will also play an important role in providing guidance to the Financial Accounting Team, while working closely with teams across the organisation to ensure strong financial governance and performance.

This is a great opportunity for a finance professional who enjoys working in a complex environment and partnering with stakeholders, while utilising your sound understanding of Australian Accounting Standards, accounting principles and Australian tax legislation.

This is a full-time temporary role available until to 30 September 2027, based at the Knox Civic Centre. We support flexible working arrangements while ensuring operational needs of the role are met.

This is a Band 6 classified role. Remuneration will be $98,353.35 to $107,416.64 (depending on experience) plus superannuation in accordance with the Superannuation Guarantee.

What you will bring to this role  

The key selection criteria for this role are:

  • Significant experience applying Australian Accounting Standards in a complex organisation

  • A sound knowledge of Australian tax legislation, particularly Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST)

  • Experience in the preparation of annual financial statements

  • Demonstrated financial accounting experience including general ledger reconciliations and month end journals with excellent analytical and problem solving skills in a complex organisation is essential

  • Demonstrated experience in leading a financial accounting function, including oversight of financial governance

  • The ability to support and guide others

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams

  • Experience working in a complex organisational environment with competing priorities

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and written skills with experience in developing position papers, policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and maintaining complex spreadsheets, including the use of intermediate Excel skills

  • Tertiary qualification in accounting or related discipline and have completed CPA Australia or Institute of Chartered Accountants qualification

  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in a similar role
